Challenge
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming education, employment, and everyday life. The next generation of students must be AI literate and have the technical intuition and technological skills required to participate fully in the workforce of the future.
EDC’s project Integrating AI Literacy into Community College Programs addresses this urgent need. In collaboration with five community colleges across the nation, EDC is working to increase the AI literacy and skills of students in two-year community colleges.
Key Activities
EDC will carry out the following activities:
- Develop a profile of what middle-skilled AI workers need to know and be able to do
- Collaborate with community college partners to design new AI programs, courses, and curricula that align with local industry skill demands
- Integrate foundational AI skills into data science courses
- Support colleges’ development and implementation of strategic AI literacy plans
- Build capacity of faculty to teach AI literacy and integrate AI into data science
- Provide faculty externships in industry and experiential learning for students
- Investigate and document the effectiveness of each AI literacy course and its integration at each community college
Impact
- Will build a replicable approach to creating pathways to AI-enabled careers
- Will build the AI literacy required for individuals to be active citizens and have successful careers in technology-centered fields of employment
- Will increase the number of community college students who are aware of the impact and applications of AI across industry sectors
