Event: Improving Equity and Diversity in Teacher Preparation

Educators, state and district administrators, and teacher education specialists are invited to attend “Equity and Diversity in Teacher Preparation: Learning from Research and Practice,” a one-day conference hosted by the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands at Education Development Center (EDC). The conference will be held June 25, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. (ET), at EDC headquarters, 43 Foundry Avenue in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Marilyn Cochran-Smith, Cawthorne Professor of Teacher Education for Urban Schools at the Boston College Lynch School of Education, will be the keynote speaker. She will present an overview of her work on teacher education research, practice, and policy with a focus on equity and diversity.
A panel of speakers representing state education agencies, higher education, and alternative programs will discuss their efforts to promote equity and their current research needs. The panelists include:
- Leslie Couse, Executive Director of Engagement and Faculty Development, Professor of Education, University of New Hampshire
- Lisa Foehr, Director, Office of Educator Excellence and Certification Services, Rhode Island Department of Education
- Ed Liu, Chief Improvement Officer, Boston Teacher Residency Program
EDC researchers will lead state-based breakout sessions, working with participants to identify state strengths and areas for growth.
“Equity and diversity have been at the core of EDC’s work throughout our 60-year history,” said EDC Vice President Jill Weber, director of REL Northeast & Islands. “We are looking forward to bringing together researchers and practitioners to discuss how we can promote a focus on equity and diversity in the preparation that U.S. educators are receiving before they enter our schools and classrooms.”
